Pre-Cut Kinesiology Tape: Design Rationale and Taping Principles
Abstract
This paper explains the thinking behind Easy Kinesiology Tape’s patented pre-cut shape. It covers the three working principles physical therapists follow when they cut and apply kinesiology tape by hand, why those cutting techniques are hard for people to reproduce at home, and how the pre-cut geometry (an I-shaped base, triangular arrow slits, curved interior cuts, and a central diamond opening that acts as a placement guide) was drawn to fold three clinical cutting patterns into a single strip that can be applied without training. It closes with the designer’s application guidance and safety notes. The paper describes design intent and standard taping practice; it does not report a clinical trial of this product.
What the paper covers
- Scope and purpose. Why the paper exists: to document the design brief behind the pre-cut shape, in plain language.
- Taping principles. The three principles the designer works from in clinical practice: purpose of application, stretch direction and the tape’s elastic recoil, and matching the cut to what the tissue needs.
- From clinic shapes to one strip. Therapists cut tape into I, X, and claw shapes for different jobs. Cutting them well takes training and time. That is the core obstacle for home use.
- The pre-cut geometry. What each feature of the shape is designed to do: the I-shaped base as the foundation, the triangular arrow slits for lift, the curved interior cuts, and the central diamond opening as a visual guide that puts the sore spot in the middle of the strip.
- Application guidance. The designer’s step-by-step protocol (place the diamond over the sore spot, stretch each side with 15% tension, wear for 2–7 days) plus removal and skin-care notes.
- Safety and limitations. The tape is self-care support: a supplement to professional care, not a substitute for it.
